The Mutawatir: Jurnal Keilmuan Tafsir Hadith is published twice a year by the Department of Al-Quran and Hadith, Faculty of Ushuluddin and Philosophy, Sunan Ampel State Islamic University (UIN) Surabaya Indonesia. The journal aims at publishing an original academic research on the main topic of the Quran and Hadith studies. The subject covers all related issues on the Quran and Hadith such as the classical inquiry of the Quran, tafsir and Hadith, methodological examination of the classical and contemporary scholars to the Quran and Hadith, contemporary approaches to the Quran and Hadith, the oriental studies of the Quran and Hadith, the living phenomena which is so called as living Quran and Hadith, and all related issues to the interdisciplinary studies of the Quran and Hadith.

Abstract

This article examines tafsîr maqâ?idî in epistemological outlook. It studies the origins, methodology, and validation of its construction. Based on depth literary analysis, this article argues that tafsîr maqâ?idî cannot be separated from its origins in the historical development of Islamic law. It can be seen from the rise of tafsîr maqâ?idî that is much more originated and established from maqâ?id al-sharî’ah in terms of Islamic law. The basic framework of tafsîr maqâ?idî is not only developed by Muslim scholars who are well educated in Islamic law such as Ibn ‘Âshûr and Jaser Auda, but also initiated by scholars of theology such like Mu?ammad ‘Abduh and Mu?ammad Rashîd Ri?â. The article also suggests that the movement of maqâ?id al-sharî’ah thoughts including tafsîr maqâ?idî has relevant effort in constructing Islamic knowledge which is well known in contemporary Islamic discourse as islamization of knowledge. On the origins, tafsîr maqâ?idî is like tafsir bi al-ra’y that attempts to find a logical basis and methods that is appropriate to Islamic sources, and on the same time it tries to put a logic and reason as the basis for interpretation. On methodological side, tafsîr maqâ?idî is built in two traces of tafsir tradition that is well known as naqlî and ‘aqlî methods. And on validation, tafsîr maqâ?idî forms itself into a wide creativity in using naqlî and ‘aqlî methods by emphasizing on rational and empirical study with special reference to ma?âli? mursalah.

Abstract

This article tries to explain the concept of Islamic wasa?îyah (Islamic moderate) from the prophetic ?adîth point of view. It, then, attempts to elaborate the prophet’s attitudes and sayings which have to do with the issue of moderation. It should be noted that many researches have focused more on the polemical ?adîth that are mistreated by some radical Muslims to legitimate their arguments, but are little to investigate the moderation side of the ?adîth. Methodologically, the article employs thematic method to collect ?adîth from the classical book and then analyze it by the contextual frame. By searching of the terminological explanation of moderation, it can be summarized that the prophetic ?adîth has little to say about moderation in term of wasa?îyah, but there has ample of word which is equivalent to the term, that is al-qa?d. Those ?adîth has brought several principles and characteristics, such like al-khayrîyah (chosen), al-‘adâlah (fairness), al-tasâmu? (tolerant attitude), al-tawâzun (balance), al-istiqâmah (consistency), and raf‘ al-?araj (eliminating difficulties). Those principles are significant in terms of demonstrating the peaceful life and arguing the violent and intolerant conducts. The contextual analysis of the ?adîth has argued that those values should be put on the universal principles which Islam has come along with.

Abstract

Wa?dat al-wujûd is a doctrine that believes in the ultimate form of God. While the universe is believed as a shadow that totally depends on the Creator (?aqq Ta‘âlâ). Wa?dat al-wujûd is one of the most inciting topics debated by Muslim scholars in the middle time of Islam. The opponents of wa?dat al-wujûd has used to accuse it as heresy. They consider wa?dat al-wujûd as theologically rooted from Zoroastrianism, Hinduism, Platonism and Neoplatonism. The opponents of wa?dat al-wujûd generally come from “literal-minded” theologians. They tend to understand the Qur’an and ?adîth in its outward meaning. Whereas the inner meaning has abundantly been contained in the Qur’an. This paper is an effort to analyze some verses of the Qur’an by using ta’wîl (esoteric analysis) and to some extent is a reflection on Syamsuddin al-Sumatrani’s teaching. In the end, this paper argues that although literally term of wa?dat al-wujûd does not exist in the Qur’an, however, the analysis shows that the teaching of wa?dat al-wujûd is definitely rooted in the Qur'an.

Abstract

This article aims to find out how the opinion of IbnKathîr and Rashîd Rid}a about naskh in the Qur’an? How did IbnKathîr and Rashîd Rid}a interpret the verses about religious freedom that were claimed to be annulled? And what are the implications for the interpretation of texts about religious freedom? The research method is a library research, with the object of religious freedom verses claimed to be annulled in the book of IbnKathîr and RashîdRid}â. Using the descriptive-analytical and comparative analysis with Hermeneutics Romansis Friedrich Daniel Ernst Schleiermacher approach, the article argues thatIbnKathîr acknowledges the existence of naskh in the Qur’an, but not everything said as annulled is received by him. While Rashîd Rid}a rejects the theory of naskh in the Qur’an. Related to interpretation, IbnKathîr and Rashîd Rid}a reject the opinion of naskh against the verses of religious freedom. Though Rashîd Rid}a seems more emphatically for his refusal. Being the most important implications are that the verses of religious freedom are fundamental and universal, so it is impossible for them to be annulled; the need for change in the paradigm of the law lapsed; and the creation of a peaceful religious life.

Abstract

Sha?rûr methodology and legal implications have been widely written by researchers, but only some researchers elaborate Sunnah in depth analysis. In discussing Sunnah, Sha?rûr mentioned the problems that have serious implications, such, whether all the words, actions and silence of Muhammad is the result of revelation or ijtihâd of Muhammad himself? Sha?rûr assumed that Sunnah is actually the result of ijtihâd of Muhammad himself and it is not revelation. Therefore, definition that has been established on Sunnah (everything that comes from Muhammad either of the words, deeds and statutes) is not appropriate. Dissolving this definition for Sha?rûr became possible because these definitions are not made by Muhammad himself, but by the next generations. According to him, Sunnah is derived from the word sanna which means the ease and flow smoothly. Thus, what is said, done and set by Muhammad is an example of how such limits practiced in space and time of Muhammad. He is not the last and not the only laws that must be done. Based on the definition that has been made, Sha?rûr divided Sunnah into two categories, namely sunnah risâlah and sunnah nubûwah. Sunnah risâlah maintains on law, morals, and good manners, while sunnah nabûwah preserves objective sciences. Further, it implies that the adherence to sunnah risâlah is an obligation, adherence to sunnah nubûwah is non-compulsory.

Abstract

This article aims to explore the ?adîth thematically on the act of lesbianism in the normative roots. The methods used are operationally by generating ?adîths that are related to the topic, making typology, defining the primary ?adîth, takhrîj, and analyzing it in textual and contextual perspective. This article finds that some ?adîth which are talking straightly on lesbianism are narrated by al-?abrânî. It suggests that the act of lesbianism is a sinful deeds that are similar to the act of sexual intercourse (zinâ). In the wide analysis, it can be noted that Islam does not give space for making it legal for the doers of lesbianism. It is not only because the act of lesbianism has been considered as deviation from the nature of human sexual orientation, but also because it certainly contradicts to the basic legal of human relation. Otherwise, there are ample of ? adîth giving instruction to prevent people from such action, that is by not to open and look at other human genitals (‘awrat), not to have body contact that arouse sexual desire, and to emerge awarness of sexual identity and sexs by not to follow the deeds or dressing the opposite gender clothes.

Abstract

This present paper is heavily influenced by this notion of inter-connectivity, trying specifically to demonstrate the correlation between the Prophet traditions on medication and modern health sciences. The Prophet medication project aims not at discovering utterly new ideas, but it reinforces any truth and denies false claims accredited to the Prophet. This paper, thus, focuses on both examining the medication practiced by the Prophet and exercising the accuracy of its sources. The basic argument developed in this paper is that transcendental objectivity within the Prophet traditions and empirical rationality within medical sciences must correlate. Through this examination, this paper concludes that the medication practiced by the Prophet as described in his traditions can be used as complementary to the modern medical treatment. Moreover, as long as it is carried out by using objective and accurate scientific methods, the Prophet medication can be used as an alternative to heal some diseases which modern medication has not found their cures. Abstract

Hadith ghadir khum is the culmination of a dispute between Sunni and Shi’ite. This article tries to analysis comprehensively the hadith by elaborating understanding in two perspectives: exploring the factors that cause these differences and re-understandinging the interpretation hadith. This study found that there were differences in understanding between the Sunni and Shi’ite schools in understanding the hadith. This difference is at least caused by two things, namely: the context of the hadith and the meaning of the word maul. According to the Sunnis, this hadith contains a warning from the Prophet to his people to love and help one another (having walâ’- muwalât) and not hating and opposing each other (mu’âdat). Meanwhile, according to Shi’ah, this hadith is considered a moment in which the Prophet directly named Ali as a successor and successor to the leadership after the Prophet. Reconstruction of understanding is done through two things, namely the historical reconstruction and reinterpretation of the meaning of the womb. Overall, the ghadir khum hadith is interpreted as a form of the Prophet’s love for the people and their families. The love of his people is proven by his will in the form of thaqalain, namely al-Kitab (Alquran) and love for his family with the intention to make Ali (representation of ahl al-bait) as maulâ (friend, lover) of Muslims.
